| I'm quite conflicted about how I feel about this book. I adored the first two books in the trilogy, but I felt like this one was just missing something for me. I expected it to have as many plot twists and have me questioning my own sanity as much as the second book did, but it just lacked that for me. Don't get me wrong, it was still a great book, beautifully written and showed how amazing a writer Michelle Hodkin is. I won't go too much into plot as it is the third in a series, however, I just felt like the characters in this book weren't the same as they were in the first two books. I felt like Mara seemed fairly normal throughout this book, disregarding the obvious, and that the change seemed quite sudden. The lack of Noah in this book also bothered me a bit as I'd become used to him as one of the main characters. I also felt this book really delved into the unbelievable. The first two books became unbelievable in some plot points because of the psychological thriller aspects of the novels, but this one, I felt, just changed the genre a bit and I found it slightly off-putting. Especially when Mara's brother just understands and accepts things. A couple of things I did love about this book though was the character development of Jamie, who remains witty throughout the novel, and is a great comic relief; he is both realistic yet sarcastic. Although many people I know didn't like the flashback chapters, I personally loved them! Her descriptions made everything seem so real that I felt like I had travelled to India and lived in a Victorian-esque London myself. It portrays her amazing ability to write and I would love to read a historical fiction type novel, by her, if she ever wrote such a thing. Part of me is also happy with the way the book ended and tied everything up, although there were still a couple of things I didn't really understand. I do think that this trilogy may have been better off as a duology with a different ending altogether, but the ending of the final book does work with the rest of the trilogy. As I have said before, I absolutely love this trilogy, and I think it will always remain one of my favourites but the ending just lacked something for me, which is why I only gave it 3.5/4 stars. I would still recommend this trilogy to anyone who loves paranormal YA with a bit of romance, as I know many people preferred this book to the second. |
